You are a family living in Germany and you want to host an au pair? We are going to explain to you the conditions to follow to become an au pair host family.
Eligibility criteria to host an au pair in Germany.
More details below.
Family checklist
□ Live with at least one child between the ages of 3 and 18.
□ Be able to financially cover the costs of hosting an au pair.
□ Speak mainly German at home.
□ Share the values of the program and help the au pair integrate into your family and your country.
Accommodation checklist
□ Have a private room for the au pair (9 m² minimum) with a window and a door he / she can lock.
□ Provide him / her with an individual bathroom or one to share with your child(ren).
Checklist for the organization between the au pair and your family
□ Get a signed contract between the two parties (post-search).
□ Respect the agreement between you and your future au pair.
□ Give assignments related to the children or the life of the house to your au pair.
□ Respect a schedule of work to give to the au pair (not longer than 30 hours a week).
General Conditions
As we said, you must be able to afford the expenses due to an additional person living with your family (food, accommodation, insurance, and German language course) and his / her pocket money.
🗣️ The host family is obliged to contribute € 50 a month to the cost of the language course.
💸 The amount of the pocket money is minimum € 280 a month.
The au pair program is a cultural exchange between the au pair and your family. The young student goes abroad to learn the language and to visit the country. This is why families who wish to host an au pair in Germany have to speak the language of the host country at home. The program requires a good integration of the au pair within the family for the good progress of the stay as well.
Conditions for the accommodation
The room you have to provide must be at least 9 m² with a window to the outside. The room has to be lockable for privacy and must be furnished (bed, wardrobe, table, chair, shelf and more if you can).
⚠️ The au pair cannot share a room with your child(ren), only the bathroom.
If you don't have an extra room, you can provide him / her with external accommodation to your house or flat. This can be an annex, a maid's room, a caravan, etc. However, we recommend providing a room part of the same place the family lives in, in line with the program's values 👍.
Conditions for the organization of the stay
It is necessary to establish a contract between the au pair and you in order to define the terms of the stay. This includes the obligations of the parties: the services due, the working hours, the remuneration, the duration of the stay, etc. Depending on your formula, we will write the agreement that you will have to sign.
The contract must be for at least 6 months and at most 1 year. It is not possible to renew the contract of the au pair even if it was less than one year.
Au pairs are not allowed to work more than 6 hours a day and 30 hours a week. The au pair has the right to a full rest day a week, including at least one Sunday per month. Furthermore, the au pair has the right to at least 4 evenings off per week.
⚠️ Extra hours must be agreed prior to work and must be compensated for with time off or pocket money.
📅 For holidays, the au pairs with a 1 year contract are entitled to be paid holidays of 4 weeks.
On your profile, in your dashboard, you have access to all the tasks that your future au pair will be able to do as part of his/her contract with you. Check only those you want the au pair to do. In general, an au pair can :
• look after your kids, bring them to school or activities, walk and play with them.
• help keep the house clean and complete light housework.
• prepare breakfast and simple meals.
• look after your house and your pets (if you have some).

Personal and uncomplicated - definitely give it a try. I made a phone call last week and finding someone to talk to as nice as Fanny is rare. I was pretty insecure at first because my French isn't the best but then it was very easy to just chat in English. You'll definitely get the information you need here. It's personal and uncomplicated. Recommend, recommend>-<

Manuela from Au Pair BUTRFLY is amazing. She found us a gem called Betty. Since her arrival, everything got brighter. It has only been one month, but we know the best is yet to come. We feel very lucky and we hope many future candidates will be brave as Betty to join us in Whistler Canada.
